Assistant Teacher

About the Job

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

The Assistant Teacher is responsible for the implementation of educational plans and direct instruction of students. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the program data collection, recording and maintaining educational planning and implementation of individual behavioral programs within the Amego school setting, and general care and maintenance of the classroom. S/he reports directly to the Head Teacher/Certified Special Education Teacher and reports issues in a timely fashion.

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:   

The Assistant Teacher reports to the Head Teacher/Certified Special Education Teacher and the Director of Children’s Services. He/she works cooperatively with the team; they assure the quality of service delivery while maintaining positive and consistent working relationships with all staff and work as a constructive and active team member in all duties.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.         Instructs students according to the IEP.

 

2.         Maintains understanding of all educational and behavioral programs for all students.

 

3.         Attends all team meetings. Participates in the review of progress, problems, methods, techniques, schedules, etc.

 

4.         Serves as a role model for staff in communication, interaction with the students, SOLVE techniques and professional practices. Sets a positive tone and encourages positive attitudes in all team members.

 

5.         Documents student’s progress on all tasks being taught.

 

6.         Attends required training, as well as on student program training.

 

7.         Maintains a professional appearance at the work site.

 

8.         Observes and safeguards students rights.

 

9.         Administers medications as prescribed by student’s physician, as scheduled during school hours. Maintains accurate medication records for all students. Holds and maintains medication administration certification.

 

10.       Assumes responsibility for the daily schedule and for assigning staff to students throughout the day in the absence of a teacher. Oversees that the staff are following the schedule and assures that appropriate ratios are maintained or safely accommodated by adjusting the ratio assignments. Coordinates emergency needs with the approval of the Head Teacher/Certified Special Education Teacher or school personnel.

 

11.       Participates in training new staff, under the direction of the Head Teacher/Certified Special Education Teacher.

 

12.       Assists in the overall team approach in maintaining organization in the assigned areas. i.e. filing, inventories, and other relevant responsibilities. Participates in the general upkeep and cleaning of the school areas.

 

13.       Completes all required paperwork which could include, but is not limited to: Tallying data, graphing data, schedules, fire drill logs, home-to-school communication logs etc.

 

14.       Will periodically work at other Amego locations and may be required to work at a residential site for an alternate site day and school holiday .

 

15.       Assists their supervisor in developing new systems when necessary.

 

16.       Reports on a regular basis to the Head Teacher/Certified Special Education Teacher regarding responsibilities described herein.

 

17.       Maintains a positive working relationship with all Amego personnel and students.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

1.         BS/BA in a related field is preferred. High School Diploma required.

 

2.         Some supervisory experience preferred.

 

3.         Excellent interpersonal skills. Communication skills must include accuracy, clarity and consistency.

 

4.         Maturity, good judgment and ability to work with students in the community.

 

5.         Current First Aid, CPR, Medication Administration, and the Heimlich maneuver certification or willingness to obtain and maintain them.

 

6.         Must be able to meet all of the Essential Functions of the position. Initial and continued employment is contingent upon:

 

a. A successful completion of a drug screen and pre-employment physical (for all

     hires after 1/92).

 

b. Employees are required to enroll in, pass and maintain certification after hire in     

     a SOLVE (Strategies of Limiting Violent Episodes) Course. Its physical

     requirements are as follows:

 

                        -able to run 25 yards without difficulty

                        -able to pivot 180 degrees off each leg

                        -able to stand from a kneeling position with ease with no holding on

                        -has full range of motion in both of the shoulders

                        -able to lift 20 lbs. to shoulder height without difficulty

-able to bend trunk forward 45-60 degrees from a standing position for a minimum of two minutes

                        -able to rotate head (full normal range of motion)

                        -able to bend neck backwards and forwards (full range of motion)

 

            c. Hear sufficiently to identify behaviors targeted auditorially and to                                       respond to assist calls

 

            d. Able to understand and memorize behavior management programs

 

e. Speak English sufficiently to communicate with staff, students and related

     parties.

 

            f. Perform mathematical computations and write required reports.

 

g. Vision sufficient to observe target behaviors of students and perform safety

     functions.

 

7.         Must have a valid driver’s license
