Position Title: Shipping/Material Handling Supervisor
Company Info: World Color Press Inc - Taunton Retail is a manufacturer of printed retail flyers for many local and national retail sales establishments.
Summary
Oversees the Shipping/Material Handling Department. Serves on the management/supervisory team, and provides guidance and advice to the General Manager and other managers in regards to shipping issues. Supervises the work of Shipping employees.
Responsibilities
- Works closely with the Pressroom to ensure finished product meets customers’ quality and delivery expectations.
- Ensures box and other inventories are accurate.
- Completes necessary paperwork at the completion of a job for both internal departments, such as accounting/finance, and for the customer.
- Interacts with other plants concerning issues to ensure customer needs are met.
- Ensures that department equipment is properly maintained through a preventive maintenance program and through the involvement of plant maintenance personnel or vendor maintenance when necessary.
- Maintains a working knowledge of customers, jobs, and their specific needs.
- Coordinates with vendors when necessary to meet needs for paper, corrugated, strapping, stretch wrap, and other relevant supplies.
- Schedules department employees ensuring coverage meets both staffing and production requirements.
- Serves as the department supervisor for the Shipping functions, directing and monitoring work and taking steps to ensure work is accurate and complete.
- Responsible for adhering to the budget for the Shipping Department
- Develops and documents departmental procedures, making revisions as necessary.
- Ensures adherence to all applicable federal and state regulations, such as, EEO, Wage and Hour, OSHA, Sarbanes-Oxley, etc.
- Ensures compliance with the Company’s Code of Conduct policy.
- Functions as an advisor to the General Manager on shipping issues.
- Conducts annual performance appraisals of departmental employees.
- Conducts and/or coordinates the training of Shipping Department employees.
- Functions as a member of the management team of the plant, including participation in daily production meetings; Management By Walk Around (MBWA); Safety requirements, including the STOP program and monthly meetings; and employee relations activities.
- Enforces employee compliance with all department-specific and company safety rules and policies
- Oversees grounds management – snow removal, lawn and garden maintenance, yard cleanup, etc.
- Serves as back-up to Logistics Coordinator in scheduling shipments
- Participates in the hiring of prospective employees
- Operates departmental equipment as needed on the operations floor
- Performs other work as deemed appropriate and necessary by management to meet business needs.
Reporting Relationship
Directly reports to Warehouse Operations and Scheduling Manager.
Qualifications
Strong communication, leadership, organization, and supervisory skills. Good analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent ability to work well with other departmental managers, supervisors, and employees, both internal and external to the plant. Ability to develop reports and business correspondences, and the ability to present the information in a meaningful manner. Must be able to deal with ambiguity and constant change. Must be accessible/available nights and weekends in case of urgent needs. Above average PC skills, especially with MS Excel. Must be speak, read, and write English.
Education and Experience
A minimum of 5 years in a supervisory or management position overseeing shipping in a busy and 24/7 hectic manufacturing environment that deals with tight delivery timelines and deadlines. Experience in the printing business, preferably retail printing a strong plus. High School Diploma required. College degree in business or related field preferred.
