Job Title: TAX MANAGER


 


General Purpose/Function: The Manager is a liaison between Partners, Sr. Managers, clients, and internal staff in fulfilling the Firm's mission. Individuals at this level have an extensive knowledge of tax law as well as excellent computer skills. A Tax Manager is responsible for a variety of complex assignments and has more extensive tax knowledge then a Tax Supervisor. This individual also has responsibility for business development, staff management, and administrative functions.


 


Essential functions/Responsibilities: (core duties and tasks that are fundamental and not marginal to the performance of the job.)


Develops a relationship with engagement-related client personnel who are responsible for tax matters. Maintains contact with client personnel responsible for tax matters throughout the year; possesses a strong knowledge of the client and the client's business, especially as related to complex tax matters.


Assists in the identification of clients' needs in the area of taxation. May participate in preparing invoices and details of fees to clients.


May be responsible for compliance related deadlines such as extensions, tax estimate requirements, tax return filings, and other tax related services.


Brings unusual or significant tax questions to the attention of the senior manager or partner.


Maintains communication with Tax and A&A personnel on engagements regarding identified and ongoing tax issues.


Maintains a strong knowledge of general economic conditions, political trends and legislative initiatives for their effect on clients.


Performs more high level Tax engagements than a Tax Supervisor, and expands ability to perform or supervise new types of engagements.


Demonstrates excellent project management skills, inspires teamwork and responsibility with engagement team members, and uses current technology and tools to enhance the effectiveness of deliverables and service.


Communicates with appropriate individuals within the film, and documents that status of Tax engagements. Keeps Partner or Senior Manager informed of all important developments on any tax engagements; analyzes problems and recommends solutions.


Communicates progress of tax engagements, problems, and resolutions to client.


Responsible for tax phase (review of tax accrual and preparation/review of tax return) of assigned audit, review, compilations engagements. May also be responsible for the review of the income tax accrual and income tax return as directed by Senior Manager or Partner on an increasingly complex basis.


Understands and researches complex tax concepts and their application to client situations. Communicates results with client after review with tax partner/senior manager.


Responsible for all aspects of client relationship under their responsibility related to budgets, client expectations, and billing.


Achieves a high level of budget realization on tax services performed and supervised.


Provides supervision and on the job training to staff assigned to engagements.


Supports training of team members, offers guidance and direction, and provides constructive criticism.


Development of training programs and acts as instructor in professional development programs.


Mentors and develops the technical skills of tax staff.


Assists Senior Tax Manager and Partners in staff management, as required, which will include scheduling and utilization, participating in staff performance evaluations, and providing verbal and written feedback.


May supervise and review work of all tax staff as needed.


Develops personal marketing plan/program.


Active in community involvement, including leadership positions.


Involved in trade, industry, and professional groups including leadership positions that provides the opportunity for professional growth and promotion of firm services.


Identifies expanded service opportunities with existing clients through client peer networking and communicates to Partner or Manager.


Develops external referral networks for identifying prospects.


Displays excellent sales and communication skills to participate with Senior Managers or Partners in prospecting opportunities.


Effective speaking and presentation skills.


Regularly meets with staff to discuss and resolve issues.


Assists in developing and carrying out departmental goals, policies, and guidelines.


Participates in other administrative activities as requested by the Managers or Partners.


 


Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements: (years of job-related experience required, type of degree, certifications/licenses, and other specific skills)


Bachelor's degree in Accounting


Typically a minimum of six years of tax related experience in public accounting, demonstrating a progression in complexity, scope of tax matters, with increasing supervisory and marketing experience.


Current or valid CPA license or other designation (ie, EA, JD, or MST)


Above average communication skills (both oral and written)


Proficient in the use of computers, accounting software, and tax software programs


Demonstrated marketing skills


Successful problem solving and analytical skills


Ability to perform in under time pressures and meet deadlines under highly


interruptive conditions


Strong work ethic, honest, and ethical


Proactive, resourceful, and customer oriented


Ability to effectively deal with engagement situations that may involve


controversy and influencing others


Professional behavior and appearance


Overtime required periodically during the year Heavy overtime may be required February 1 through April 15.
